Why Does It Matter?
An Unseen Battle
Throughout our years serving children and their families in the hospital, we have observed a difficult and often unseen challenge that many families face: financial stress and hardship due to overwhelming medical bills.
Many of the families who have a child diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness hold steady jobs and make regular payments on their bills. Often times though, a cancer diagnosis means one parent must step away from their job or work less hours, taking away from the average family income they have come to know.
The addition of large medical bills after that loss of income is often what can put a family “underwater,” left scrambling to figure out how to make ends meet financially. This extra stress means the family is now fighting two battles: the illness and the finances.
First of its Kind Solution
We saw this financial toxicity separating families, and we knew we had to make a solution that gave them an escape. Enter in “Flockets,” the first of its kind apparel line that has 50% of profits helping fund micro-loans for families with a child battling cancer.
Flockets (short for fleece pocket shirts) began as a crazy idea in 2015. My friends and I had just learned how to use a sewing machine, and we starting sewing patches on our clothes.
After a few weeks, fleece patches were everywhere….on hoodies, t-shirts, hats…you name it!
And now the proper question to be asking is, “Why did they learn how to sew?”
Born from a charity
In 2015, we started a charity called Fleece & Thank You, an organization with a mission to provide every child entering the hospital for pediatric inpatient treatments with a colorful fleece blanket and a video message of support.
As Fleece & Thank You took off, our pocket shirts had to stay in their drawers. 3 years and thousands of fleece blankets later, they are coming back out to be shared with the world. This time, we are using them for GOOD.
How do I get a Flocket?
Most of our flockets are made using excess fleece from our blanket production. You can find one right on this website, and each one is a limited edition! We also have a collection of “named flockets.” Every “named” flocket is in memory of one of our blanket warriors: a child who received a Fleece & Thank You blanket during their hospital treatment. The blanket they received had a special print pattern on it, and an entire line of flockets are made with this exact pattern on the fleece pocket.
There is also another way to find yourself wearing a flocket! If you are lucky enough to attend a Fleece & Thank You blanket-making event, you are able to take one of the square scraps from the blanket you made and we will create your custom flocket from it! A shirt with a fleece pocket straight from the blanket you made with your own hands. Check out our Shop.
50% of the profit to a bigger cause
Through our work with Fleece & Thank You, it’s too often that we see a family broken apart by the financial stress of having a child in longterm hospital treatments. The average cost out of pocket for medical bills for a family with a child battling cancer is $40,000. Not many people have that kind of money in reserve, and a scary time for the health of the child also unfortunately becomes a stressful time financially for the family.
We wanted our shirts to make a difference here, in this very real problem that we witness too much. For every flocket sold, we use 50% of the profit to help fund low interest micro-loans for families with a child battling cancer. This short-term help with bills can mean a world of difference for the family.
Flockets are fun and meaningful, just like the kids in the hospital that inspired them. Thanks for listening!
